The Reality Is You Are Not Afraid to Raise Your Prices You Are Afraid to Lose the Client
Oct 07, 2026
Would you agree that there is something incredibly uncomfortable about telling a client who trusts you that their price is going up?
Especially when you genuinely care about them.
You start thinking about their budget. You wonder if they’ll be upset. You worry they’ll think you’re greedy. And suddenly you’re negotiating against yourself before you’ve even had the conversation.
I’ve done it too. Even after 18 years of owning a business, I still pause when it is time to raise prices.
But eventually, your own numbers make the decision for you. Payroll increases. Software increases. Insurance increases. The level of support you provide grows. And sometimes you look at a longtime client and realize their price simply doesn’t cover what it costs to serve them anymore.
While keeping their price the same might feel kind, it isn’t sustainable. And since they probably want you to stick around and keep helping them, they are probably going to be ok with you raising your rates.
What I’ve learned is that people can handle change much better when they have notice and are not being blindsided.
Tell them what is changing. Tell them why. Give them time to adjust their budget. Answer their questions. And give them the freedom to decide whether continuing to work together still makes sense.
Some clients may leave.
That part definitely hurts.
But underpricing yourself to keep everyone comfortable eventually comes at the expense of you, your employees, or the health of your business. And that hurts much more than losing a client.
Friendly reminder: You are allowed to build a profitable business AND care deeply about the people you serve. Those two things were never supposed to be opposites.

Crys
