I Was Helping My Clients Get Rich While I Was Going Broke

I used to think working harder made me worthy of making more money. Coming from poverty, foster care, and government assistance, struggle felt normal to me. So, when I became a business owner, I knew hard work. I knew how to push. I knew how to survive. What I didn’t know was how to build wealth without feeling guilty about it.

For years, I thought being a “good, selfless, and humble” person meant not needing too much. Don’t charge too much. Don’t make too much. Don’t get too comfortable. And definitely don’t let people think money matters to you. I worked ridiculous hours trying to prove my value instead of recognizing that my ability to see problems, find solutions, and help people had value beyond what I was charging. I was going broke while my clients were getting rich and experiencing exponential growth.

Eventually, I learned that profit wasn’t taking something away from someone else or from my clients’ businesses. Profit gave me the ability to take care of my people so I could help even more business owners.

Profit allowed me to hire employees and pay them well. It allowed me to build cash reserves, so payroll wasn’t dependent on whether we had a great sales month. It allowed me to pay off our house and give my family a level of security I didn’t know as a child. It has helped me send my children to college and support the lives they want to build. And, incredibly, it has allowed me to take care of my employees so they can build wealth for their families in ways they once only dreamed about too.

I went from growing up in poverty to building generational wealth, and the greatest lesson hasn’t been how to make money. It has been learning that I’m allowed to keep enough of it to create stability for the people I love while also helping my clients build the lives of their dreams.

Profit didn’t make me greedy. It made me more capable of taking care of the people who matter to me.

And that was the whole point of building wealth in the first place.
