I Never Planned to Become the Weakest Link in My Business But That's What I Became
Sep 21, 2026
13 years ago, I suffered a traumatic brain injury that completely altered my life. During a soccer game, I took a ball to the head so hard that I had to be resuscitated three times. For the next six months, I slept 22 hours a day. And then, over the next six years, I began the long road to recovery where I had to relearn to walk, talk, and live again. Flash forward to present day, where I am still navigating life differently because of the brain injury that led to Young Onset Parkinson’s Disease.
Do you know what happens when you are a business owner and something catastrophic like this happens? I didn’t know but sadly, I learned.
I learned that I had no succession plan. And that my business relied almost entirely on me. I learned that when I couldn’t work, there wasn’t someone who could simply step into my role and keep everything moving. I had built a successful business, but I had not built a business that could survive without me.
Things have changed since then. Kinda.
Today, I build businesses knowing that I can get sick. I can get hurt. And that I need more rest than most people. I am not a 24/7 hustle-and-grind kind of gal. Most weeks, I am lucky to work 15 hours, and even then, it is in small chunks of time and bursts of energy.
