Can You Afford Year-End Bonuses? Read This Before You Write That Check

There's something really special about being able to give your employees a year-end bonus. These are the people who have shown up for your business all year, taken care of your customers, and helped you build something you're proud of. Of course you want to show them how much you appreciate them. And when December rolls around, it's easy to look at a profitable year and feel excited about sharing that success.

I've seen business owners give generously in December, only to find themselves struggling to make payroll in February. It's heartbreaking because their intentions were wonderful, but the financial planning wasn't there to support them.

Before deciding how much to give, I encourage you to review your year-to-date Profit & Loss report and forecast your cash flow for the first quarter of 2027. Look at your revenue trends, upcoming expenses, seasonal slowdowns, and payroll obligations. Remember, being profitable doesn't necessarily mean you have cash available to spend. And while employee bonuses may qualify as tax deductions, spending money just for a write-off doesn't make financial sense if your business needs that cash.

This is also why I love the PROFIT SHARING account in my STOP Method™. I recommend transferring 1% of gross revenue into this account every two weeks throughout the year. That way, you're intentionally setting aside money to celebrate your employees instead of pulling from your SAVINGS, TAXES, or OPERATIONS accounts. Your SAVINGS should ideally have three to six months of operating reserves, because taking care of your employees also means protecting their future paychecks.

And if bonuses aren't financially possible this year, that's okay too. I know how difficult that conversation can feel, especially when your team has worked incredibly hard. But a smaller bonus that protects job security is far more meaningful than a large check that creates financial stress a few months later. Be transparent about how bonuses are determined, honor any promised compensation, and help your employees understand how their contributions support the business.

I think sometimes, as business owners, our hearts want to give more than our budgets can comfortably support. And I love that generosity. But the goal is to build a business where you can continue taking care of your people year after year. I can guarantee that your employees want stability over a one time year end bonus.

At My CFO, we help business owners plan for these decisions by reviewing financial trends, forecasting upcoming expenses, and making sure their generosity is supported by a healthy cash flow strategy.
