Unpopular Opinion: Being proud that you are paying the minimum you can for a big brain with loads of experience, has me questioning your morals, ethics, and integrity.

Sub in any job title you want.  Stop being proud of paying for cheap labor. Ewwww. So gross. And yes, I distanced myself from these business owners.

I've heard all these excuses/sayings before:

  1. "It's all my business could afford" or
  2. "I can't find any good help here" or
  3. "No one here wants to work" or
  4. "They just got an $X raise last year" or
  5. "They are making $X more than when they were hired"

Those are all lame "reasons" and you know it. The real reason is this: You don't want to pay what you should be paying. You want to keep paying yourself top dollar instead of taking care of your team.

I said what I said...or...I wrote what I wrote.

I never have an issue finding quality people to work with. I never have an issue hiring and retaining unicorns. I have hired thousands of employees. While they are all not a culture fit, I never worried that their pay was the reason they left.

It is one thing I am very clear on with hiring: We base wages, salaries, and raises off of competitive wages. We honor our staff for their experience.

Payroll is supposed to be your biggest expense. It is supposed to be your biggest investment.

You being proud that you are paying the minimum you can for a big brain with loads of experience is disappointing and hurtful to the entire small business community.

It is also disappointing to employees, who would like to be taken care of by you, instead of fearing that you won't pay them the wage you know they deserve.

My hope is that you will start to see your company's employees as the hardworking, deserving souls that they are, and that you will begin to pay them competitive wages. Invest in your team.

Be proud to pay them top dollar.
